Because Americans watch a tremendous amount of television, and it conditions
their thinking.  And since television news is designed to induce maximal FUD
(fear, uncertainty, dread) in order to maintain ratings, it makes people very
fearful, paranoid, pessimistic, and hostile.  I've actually seen studies to this
effect.
