The camera was in Aperture Priority (or Program mode) with Matrix Metering Operation - and with just a little camera movement the exposure time would go from 1/24 sec to 1/2000 sec. At 7;30 this evening I pointed my camera at the black painted hull of a ship with Aperture at 2.8 and the exposure time was 1/2000 of a second.
