It's not limited to Amsterdam.  By total coincidence I took a similar picture in
Paris about a week ago:

It didn't come out as nice as yours, but the situation is similar.  I had to
Photoshop it a lot to get this poodle out of the deep shadows, and it is still
buried in the overall photo.  What looks like vignetting isn't; that's just the
way the scene was lit (there was a pool of indirect light right near the dog,
and deeper shadows around it).

M6 TTL 0.85, Summicron-M (IV) 1:2/50, Fuji Provia 100F, and LS-2000 also.
