Austin,

There are stairs on both sides of the jump. Below are links to a couple of
views from the top of the jump. In "jump" you can see Sapporo in the
background. The stuff coming up from the skiis in Jumper4 is just moisture
from the turf kicking up as the jumper comes to a stop. The lower part of
the jump is basically like astroturf. Sprinklers run much of the time, I
assume to keep the turf slick. 

I shot these mid-morning. It was probably close to 90 degrees at the time. I
don't think temperature is the limiting factor. But wind is key. It doesn't
take much. A small gust came up and put one of the jumpers dangerously close
to one side on landing. They shut things down immediately after that. I went
back for very early light the next day, but they weren't jumping. These guys
are all World Class jumpers. I never saw one fall.

BTW, jumper7 was taken with the 80-200/4. "Jump" was taken with a 28/2.8-R.
If you look closely at the dark green part of the bottom of the jump, you
can see the sprinklers running.

Those appear to be stairs on the left side in that image...and then again in
other shots on the right side...STAIRS?  I guess it's a good idea, the
jumpers have to get back to the top somehow ;-)

And...what is the "smoke" or spray coming off the end of the skis?
