i share a similar experience.
i end up using the compensation dial, dialing in up to +2 stops.

why the  meter shuts down on manual is one of the mysteries of
M-compatible cameras, like why the hexar doesnt do ttl...

in the end, as with your friend, i use the m6.  but i can't bring
myself to sell the CLE.
