mine goes back into the jug. I also chuck it out at the same time as the
developer runs out (Xtol in 5l packs, diluted 1:2 or 1:3) and check it by
dropping bits of film leader into it and seeing how long it takes for them
to clear.

tip on mixing large quantities of eg Xtol: go to the hardware store and buy
a bucket...
