Seth,
    As an owner of both the 180mm f/3.4 APO-Telyt-R and the pre-APO 180mm
f/2.8 and can testify they are both excellent lenses.
    The 180mm f/3.4 is much lighter, but you lose the ability to use the 1.4
extender. and it doesn't focus as close as the older 2.8 version. If you can
find the earlier version with take series 7.5 filters (yes that's right
series 7.5) The lens will hold a .25 B&W diopter lens and you get close
focus.
    On the other hand, the 180mm f/2.8 takes the 1.4 extender and does focus
closer with assistance, but it is heavier.
    I have used the  APO with the 2x extender and it's fine.
    Either one is a good choice.
