i dunno -- my 7 year old nephew does pretty good w/ the ol' f100 on auto
wizzbang mode, but his roll of leica shots from last december -- ugh --
focused worse than any of michael stipe's work. tack sharp only counts if
you have the time and inclination to focus. i'm a big fan of matrix
metering myself; especially matrix metered ttl fill flash. 

you can say it has too many features he'll never use, but you could also
say, by the same token, your leica's more rugged than you'll ever need, so
unless you're going to bang rocks with it, you've overinvested. i wouldn't
say either, myself.

i'm real hesitant to recommend leicas to anybody. people who really should
have one mostly already know they do. -- but i'm always happy to let
someone try. and fwiw, if you are trying to turn someone on to leicas, the
aforementioned canon ql17 is a great intro for $40....
