I will look again in my literature. In the meantime I think you will find
that it was only after Leica became independent of Leitz that they got
serious enough about zoom lenses to actually make one for the R series (and
then the M too if you count the Tri-Elmar). I have a reference to resistance
to automation by an elder member of the Leitz family and whilst I may have
been confused there I am pretty confident that there is one to zooms too.
Will keep looking!
