The brake slows the shutter curtain during the last few millimetres of travel so that it does not not bounce back. This bouncing is one possible cause for the overexposed stripe you are getting. It also could be caused by a sticking shutter or film chip as well. It sounds to me that your M5 could use a good CLA. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the repair situation in Australia but perhaps one of our Leica-users from down under could help out?
