It is a very well known, and documented fact that a hood increases contrast
by reducing flare caused by subject light (any light, not just a light
source) hitting the front lens element outside of the framed photograph.
This is extremely important if you have a filter on because filters are not
coated nearly as well as the front element of your lens.

Use a hood.
