It's a laser turntable originally conceived in the 80's by a company
called Finial.  It does basically what you're talking about with a
scanning laser.


Back in the late-30s or 40s, Philco had a phono turntable that read the
(78rpm) grooves not with a needle but with a light beam/photocell
arrangement*. Non-contact-thus-non-wear was a selling point.

*dunno how the arm was made to track radially.
