Tom,

This is exactly what happened to my early R8 a couple of years ago.  The
only way to unlock the camera was to open the camera back, but this would do
the film no good!

I believe your camera with serial number 242xxxx was from the first
production batch, produced in around 1996-97.  I would suggest you send both
the camera and motor drive to Leica for repair.
