As far as I know, the word "giclee" was first most closely associated
with the breathtakingly expensive IRIS drum printers of a few years ago.
Printers and printing studios who bought Iris printers began to refer to
their products as "giclee prints". Iris was and is a company that
manufactures ultrasophisticated proofing printers, and they sort of
stumbled into the fine-art (or whatever you want to call it) end of
things by accident. They have recognized the error of their ways and have
stopped producing the printer that has provoked all this discussion,
preferring to return to their old work of building printers for proofing.
