One trick would be to start shooting rolls of 24 exposures...

Sorry, the smart ass remark was unavoidable. If the camera's 12-15 years
old and has never been service, you may well want to get a CLA. Before you
do, you might do well to call a Leica repairperson (like Sherry Krauter -
you'll find her info in the archives) and ask her what might be causing the
problem. She is *extremely* knowledgeable and could probably tell you over
the phone what is wrong with your camera and what needs to be done to fix
it.
