It is copied from Ghester Satorius's book, "Identifying Leica Lenses". It does apply to both R and M lenses but remember Erwin's caution that this is when the serial numbers were allocated and not necessarily exactly when the lens was produced or even if it was produced at all. It is a good guide though.
