Jem Michael Martin: An expedition to all the deserts of the world with the Leica R8 Leica photographer Michael Martin of Munich will be embarking on a spectacular 12-month journey to all the deserts of the world in the spring of 2001. Together with his partner, camerawoman Eike Waliner, he will be riding through all five continents on a BMW cross-country motor bike. This unique expedition is a tremendous challenge, taking in the Arabian Rub al Khali, the Thar in India, the Chinese Gobi and Takla Makan deserts, the Simpson desert in Australia and the Atacama in South America, the North American Mojave and Sonora deserts, the Namib, Kalahari and Sahara. Michael Martin and Eike Wallner will cross the roughest regions of the world, taking photographs with the Leica R8 SLR camera. They will be taking a wide variety of lenses ranging from the 1 5 mm super-wide angle to the 280 mm telephoto lens and including high-speed lenses like the Leica Summilux f/1.4/80 mm. What is important for Martin is "the high reliability and precision of Leica products already experienced on previous desert expeditions" - after all, the camera equipment will be exposed to unusually harsh climate and transport conditions during the trip. Michael Martin's aim is to present a new 'Deserts of the World' Leicavision slide show in autumn 2003. Leica Camera AG awards the 'Leicavision' label to slide shows in which both the presentation and the pictures are of superlative quality. Besides Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the award-winning slide show presenter will also be touring America, England, South Africa and Australia for the first time. In April 2001 German TV's Second Channel will be featuring Michael Martin in its programme '37?'. Further details are given on the internet at www.michael-martin.de. The dates of all Leicavision shows will be published on the website http://www.leica-camera.com in the Culture/Events/Calendar section.
