They make shooting MUCH smoother and nicer. Some LUGnuts claim that you can 
squeeze and extra hand-held stop or two out of the shutter speed with a 
"Softie" attached. (pun intended.) I haven't really tested that and I don't 
think that they will offer your photos any more "impact," but I AM certain 
that it is the best $10 that you can possibly spend on your Leica. I use 
Tom's Softies on my minolta SRT102s as well as my M5...sadly they aren't 
compatible with my new Bessa R, (too close to the Shutter Speed dial and a 
slightly different thread I think) but the Bessa's release is pretty easy 
to reach anyhow.
