If your choice ends up being the 250, look for the late model (E67, Germany, rotating tripod mount) and be prepared to pay for it.  The early model (Series VIII, Canada) dosn't focus as close, the focus is much slower and the tripod mount is fixed.  IMHO if you're sure you'll need something longer than the 250 I'd look for a 400 f/6.8 instead of 250 + 2x.  For reviews of the 250 and 400, see:
