Did his > checks bounce? It's not so much that the hats look silly. Think of the reaction as the reverse of a bumpkin spilling out of a turnip truck in the big city. Northerners know urbanites typically dismiss them; perhaps it's equal turnaround. The Tilley Hat is a dead giveaway that the fish is outta his water in northern Canada. I see similar reactions with Rastafarians, when jive-talking hippie white boys with dreadlocks and badly accented patois (they call them Waspafarians) try to befriend them. (When I was a little kid, I was dismayed that my father wouldn't let me wear a toy ceremonial feathered headdress to the Six Nations reserve near Brantford. Now that I'm older, the "subtlety" makes a bit more sense. Not that it's the same thing, but the reaction of the bush pilots seemed eerily similar to that as well.)
