These 'keys' span the width of the adapter and lock into two small holes on either side of the void, enabling a twisting motion to extract it. The original Leitz adapters had three indents around the rim of the adapter, at 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock. The rear of the lens cap would engage in these three indents and again facilitate removal. Two ways to solve the same problem.
