Martin,

 Mark taught me this trick with the green/blue light of an Aristo VCL head,
but it should with a filter set. First you do a two dimensional test print. 

1.  Stick in low grade filter.  Expose a test print as you would
conventionally.
2.  Stick in high grade filter.  Expose the paper again from step 1. The
only change is that now the test steps go across the other dimension. 
3.  The matrix will now allow you to pick overall exposure/contrast
variables and plan burn/dodge scenarios to alter exposure/contrast
throughout print.
