I was fortunate to have the FD 55/1.2 Aspherical with my first camera, a Canon F1, back in the '70s. It was indeed very well built, but a tad large (E58 filter) and heavy for an ten-year-old at the time! It is very useable at f/1.2 and very sharp from f/2.0. It has great bokeh, too! The FD 50/1.2 L (also an aspheric design) that I acquired much later in 1982 with the new F1, appeared to be less good. Other great lenses in the FD line up: 24/1.4L, 35/2.0, 85/1.2L, 135/2.0, 80-200/4.0L, 300/2.8L and 300/4.0L. To stay on topic, my favourite 50mm SLR lens is the current Summilux-R 50/1.4 (E60 version). Regards, Joseph Joseph@yao.com
