I think you understate their case, however: describing the 4x5 image on T-Max, the essay says, "This image is the sharpest one, but the difference to 35mm is surprisingly small." Not just relatively small, compared to grain, but small in absolute terms. And this is born out by the test patterns reproduced -- the difference in sharpness is negligible, and certainly nothing like what you would expect given the difference in enlargement ratios.
