Being American, I too automatically associate "camping in the
mountains" with "hiking", which is why I don't do it.  :-)

Oh, I also associate it with "carrying a tent" and with "that pebble
underneath you when you're trying to sleep" and with "the torrential
downpour which sends cascades of water coursing over your groundcloth
and into your sleeping bag" and with "remarkable varieties of gnawing
insects".
