This isn't true with eBay, when a bid with just seconds to go makes it impossible to counter with another one. Sniping is essentially equivalent to arranging ahead of time with the auctioneer to automatically end the auction as soon as you place your bid. The whole point about auctions is that you don't necessarily know ahead of time what your final bid will be, and if you do, you don't want other bidders to know it. Dan C.
