It may have the same name in the USA, but I'm not sure. It is used to strengthen the thread in for example aluminum alloy parts. Its also often used for threads in alloy motors, especially in racing cars. It looks a bit like a spring, but it isn't. The thread in the receptacle is made slightly larger than needed, then this coil is screwed in to it. It fits normally very tight. A special tool is used to screw it in, and also to break off a small end of it. It should be available from companies who sell nuts and bolts, and also from good quality tool shops. (Not the normal house and garden sunday open shops) The coils can be bought single, but you still need the tool. The bolt shop owner may be able to lend you one. If not, there is a kit available which includes about 10 coils, a tool and an oversize tap. The size you need would be 1/4" whitworth or equivalent Should you have to much problems, then I may be able to help you. I'll buy one here, and send you an insert and the tool for a loan, Find out first if you can get it. there is also of course always Leitz, but I wonder if it isn't to complicated for them.
