Marc,

Your M6 is more probably made from Canadian, Swiss and German parts
assembled in Wetzlar.
Remember that the M4-P was in production until 1987.
Portugal has replaced Canada at one moment.

Review of the M6 in Color Photo 4/86 page 96:

Translated by Altavista (?!?) :

Leitz photo marketing chief Wolfgang Mueller: Our parade horse ". It is
produced again like its ancestors M2 and
M3 in the Wetzlarer parent plant. Some delivery parts certainly still come
from Midland, Canada, where
it struck calculated the symbol of German camera technique 1977.
(Please, feel free to improve the translation)

and also

""In accordance with international trade laws, a product has to bear an
indication of the country in which the main part of its fabrication took
place. Therefore there are Leitz products that are labelled "Made in
Germany", including the Leica M6, most leica R lenses...etc...""
