The famous names of the German mechanical, optical, electric and
automotive industry are neither located in the old industrial heartland
(Rhein/Ruhr/Saar river basins), nor the old political capital (Berlin)
nor the old overseas trading capitals (Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck). They in
fact started as a "cottage industry", located in the previously least
developed regions of Germany, with poor farmland, no rivers good for
bulk transport and, ultimately, cheap labour with no better employment
opportunities. Sounds familiar?
