At 1:2 or 1:1 the Apo 100's or the Elpro 1:1's front lens get very close
to the subject, closer even than the 2.8/60. Stopped down for dof, the
Apo's advantage in optical performance over the conventional 4/100 or
2.8/60 will partially disappear. Opened up, shooting three dimensional
objects at close distance large parts of the image are unsharp anyway. I
therefore consider the Apo 100 as a reasonably fast general purpose lens
with a great macro option. Used for macro work only, its merits would be
wasted.
