Steve,
They just enjoy picking on me. It's okay. I'm used to it--you wouldn't
believe how much flak you catch editing a magazine.

My favorite story was about a nasty, hate-filled, vituperative letter I got
from a reader once, complaining about everything under the sun. In keeping
with my policy, I wrote him a brief, polite reply. He wrote me another
letter, explaining that he sometimes enjoyed getting drunk on brandy and
venting steam by writing outraged letters to the editor of any of the
magazines he read. Seems that in this case, he had left both the letter and
the magazine out, and his new South America cleaning lady, trying to be
helpful, had mailed it for him! He apologized profusely and promised that
the next time he "wrote" to me, he'd be sure to do what he usually
did--throw the letter into the fireplace when he was finished with it!

C'est la vie,
