Dan -

I just did a bunch of "abuse" style tests yesterday - shooting obliquely at a
road sign with a 105 Nikkor in LTM at f/2.5 the focus was dead on the letter
(M) at 4.5 feet (minimum focus).  Focusing with a C***n 501/2 in LTM at 1
meter also works.
