I recall reading about one head that used a video tube and a beam 
splitter to feed the image off to.. a vidicon? with a feedback loop. 
Idea was that the contrast could be controlled electronically, and 
the focus of the beam could be controlled as well. 

Anyone use one of these beasts? I always wondered how well they 
worked.
