Unfortunately that usually doesn't work because the lens picks up
reflections from behind the filter, which you'll see in the corners
of the picture. Also, I believe a 60mm filter will vignette. What
I've done is take a 77mm filter, put a 77-72 stepdown ring on the
back, and then a 72-48 stepdown ring. THEN I hold that over the lens.
The stepdown rings shield the edges of the hood cutouts from
reflections, and also help keep the filter centered. This even works
if you just set it on the lens without holding onto the filter, as
long as you don't point it down! (Good for tripod use.) Whether this
same setup works for you might depend on how deep your stepdown rings
are, and how thick the filter.
