It feels awkward. But I've done it to get the picture. With a telephoto aimed at a baseball player up to bat, I don't know of any other easy way to determine when to hit the shutter than to also watch the pitcher and ball. The eye looking through the telephoto sees a magnified picture. The two aren't joined together at all...but it's still possible to make sense of what you're seeing.
