Ernie,

I take the film out of the boxes and cannisters and put it in a plastic bag.  
I then put the bag on one of the little trays for metal objects and hand it 
to the security person as if this was what everybody does-it works almost 
every time in US airports.  I've found that if you act like you know what 
you're doing, you can get away with almost anything.  That and smile a lot!  
On the other hand, the couple of times I was running late and just ran the 
film through the scanner, I had no problems.  I shoot black and white mainly 
Tri-x, and have never had any fogging.  It could be that x rays are a 
nonproblem that only looks like a problem.
