To get a good idea how chrome surfaces are shot take a look at a store
flyer showing silverware or chrome housewares. If you look closely you can
see all the bounce cards, sometimes even a lens hole reflected on the
surface. To approximate this buy a couple of sheets of foam core and build
yourself a white box. You might be able to leave the back open to bounce
the light up and in or cut a hole for one flash unit and another for your
lens. You've just created yourself a nice evenly lit "cloudy day". Buy some
DAP Fun.Tak to help prop objects if you need to. Without modeling lights
you are going to have a hard time previsualizing the effect so you might
want to do some testing first. But it sounds like you have already been
doing that.
