David,

As a fellow nature photographer, I can wholeheartedly recommend the
purchase and, of course, the frequent use of this small and sturdy
tripod. It has been accompanying me for over twenty years now, and I
always have it with me. I use a small ball-head though, otherwise it
would become a bit too big and heavy . Despite the frequent use, it's
still in near-mint condition. I've used it as a brest tripod; held it
against church pillars in order to be able to shoot using available
light; crept up to small plant and flowers in the field, and so on and
so forth; it's priceless!

And now something to make you a bit envious: a forthnight ago I spotted
a very nice, used, Leitz tabletop tripod in the windowsill of a
photoshop for the incredible price of $15,-. Judging from the price I
estimated that the man had no idea what he was selling, so I offered
even a bit less. I got it with a small ballhead (not Leitz ) for $13,-!!
It's not for sale, though. I'll use as a flash stand (also nice when
taking pictures of small birds, for instance; you can keep distance by
using a telephoto lens, but use your 'normal' flash as it can be put
near the spot where you expect/attrack the birds).

It's worth trying to get a used specimen, but it's also worth its $$$
brandnew, since it'll last more than a life time.
