Hello-
Chuck Albertson is correct. The HVP was designed and sold for use with the
285 only. It was a high-voltage battery pack using a special battery, as
suggested by the initials. I have had excellent results using a 283 with my
old 6-volt original model Quantum battery. With any Quantum, especially the
Turbo, recycle times are substantially shorter and flashes per charge
dramatically superior to any dry cell I have heard of. The Quantum is
similar to an auto battery, except using a later-developed gel electrolyte
which is much safer than that used in the traditional wet cell. Every 283 or
285 I have used requires voltage that is on the high side, so battery life
with alkalines has been relatively short. Try finding a used Quantum unit,
with cords.
