The Quantum batteries are external batteries that power flashes
allowing more flashes and quicker recycle times. I have been using 2
Quantum QB1's for about 10 or 12 years. I have had them worked over
by Quantum once each during that time. I also have a Quantum Turbo
that I have had for about 6 years and it has gotten almost daily use.
They are very good replacements for the AA batteries if you use a
flash a lot.

See: http://www.qtm.com/
for more info on their batteries and flashes they power.
