Danial,
It is generally thought to mean a duplicate serial number. Orginally,
Leica did it to help customers who had cameras or lenses stolen avoid
additional custom duties.
Also, it was a way to overcome the accidental engraving of the same
serial number during production.
You have a very interesting collectible.
