This has me remembering---I had an adapter that fitted on
the inside thread of the lens--the black ring that holds in
the glass. It took #4 filters, about the size of a nickel. 
These filters were for 8mm movie camera lenses, and were
common.  Even had a little lens hood for the adapter, all
made by Walz. To move the diaphragm, I could stick a
toothpick beneath the adapter and wiggle the little stud.
