What about just plain old re-sale value?  I keep my equipment in near mint, 
and it is used easily as heavily as anyone can use cameras...but I am very 
careful of it.  I find I get a lot more for it in near mint condition that 
if it looks like it got run over by a truck.

But if you are a camera collector, then you'd be a fool to do anything that
might scratch it or otherwise do something that would diminish its value.
