The story of your recent trip was very interesting and informative. For me,
it's a continual struggle to keep things simple.

When I lived in Colorado, I photographed at high altitude a great deal. I
agree that a UV filter is very important. Without one contrast goes in the
tank and it looks very much like flare. That was my experience, at least.
