It's a struggle. On one hand we're told that Leica lenses...new ones anyway...are rugged and it's folly to protect them with a damnable, performance degrading filter. On the other...every time there's a discussion about lens cleaning...we're warned that lens coatings are more fragile than a gnat's wing. So...which is it? Here's what I know....a 50mm normal lens for many everyday SLRs cost $100 or so. I paid $900 for a USED 50mm Summicron. Unless I'm shooting a static shot in good weather, or I'm indoors, I prefer to protect my investment with a UV filter. The Leica one costs $70, by the way. (I realize it SHOULD have cost $39.95).
