Yes, of course you can rent a car and drive in Germany. However, the rules
are different and, being a US driver, you are well advised to learn these
rules before driving on the Autobahn. Germans take driving seriously and
the rules are rigidly followed thus allowing one to cruise safely at speeds
well over 100 MPH. My last trip to Germany, September 1998 (Photokina) I
"averaged" 114 MPH between Heidelberg and the Swiss border. And it was
raining most of the way. It was early Sunday morning and the traffic was
light. Yet I was passed many times.

Bottom line, it is a fun place to drive if you are skilled and "like"
driving. Learn the rules and follow them exactly. AAA should have a handbook.
