Of course you're right that if you have more bodies than you can sort out in
your bag, or need to change film, straps can be very useful.

But just having a few bodies and lenses doesn't force you to use straps.
It's nice to have a place to put one body when you pick up another. Straps
give you that, but so does an empty slot in your bag.

I find that I can easily sort out two or three bodies (with lenses attached)
in one bag. If I leave an empty slot in the bag, it's easier to drop my
current lens/body into that slot and take out another body (with lens
attached) than it is to change lenses.

When I change lenses, I usually end up needing the first lens again anyway.
That leads to more lens changes and more lost time.

So my ideal is to have a body attached to each lens. If you do that, the
first few can be stored in your bag. Then you can use straps to hang the
rest from your neck (where they'll get tangled together or swing into lamp
posts as you walk)...
 
Now if I could just find a few more of those inexpensive M-Leica bodies....
