The first edition took 30 years to write. It lists usages for every word, from first to latest, bad spellings and all. If you really want to know about the language this is the book to have. Trouble is it is very expensive and huge. They have an online edition by subscription. If you want a sample, they always have a word of the day for free. Check out http://www.oed.com/cgi/display/wotd and you'll see what we're talking about. John Joe Codispoti wrote: > All scatology aside, can someone tell me what OED stands for?
