Thanks to everyone who replied, especially Mark and Stephen.

I think my agitation is too slow and gentle. One inversion for me lasts 4-5
seconds. I'm not going to shake and rattle but I might roll in future and am
definitely going to speed up. Will report results.

Incidentally, I have found having the reels slopping around in the tank
causes very nasty effects. An air gap, however, does seem to be helpful.
