Wilber,

It is a misconception that the Shakers did not use power tools in their 
woodworking.  While they were very conservative in their religious and moral 
lives, they were quick to adopt technology when it would help them.  They 
used saws and planers that ran off of leather belted shafts turned by water 
powered turbines.  They had to turn out miles of cabinetry for their own use 
as well as all those chairs they sold.  They were pragmatic people.
